What’s your
layover situation?
Select your scenario and we’ll take you straight to the right checklist — with everything you need to know.
Short Layover
The sprint checklist. Every minute counts when your connection window is tight. This list keeps you focused and moving — from your seat to the gate without wasted seconds.
How long for a safe connection?
90 min minimum domestic, 2.5 hrs international. More at large hubs. IATA’s minimum connecting time (MCT) is the absolute floor — build a real buffer on top.
Do checked bags transfer automatically?
Only on the same booking with partner airlines. Separate tickets almost always require you to collect and re-check your bags.
Stopping for food first. Even a 10-minute food stop on a 90-minute connection can cost you the flight. Eat on the plane or at the gate.
Trusting the screenshotted gate. Gates are reassigned constantly, especially at hubs like LHR T5, JFK T4, or DXB T3. Always check the live board on arrival.
Assuming bags transfer. Separate tickets or non-partner airline combinations almost always require bag collection and re-check. Confirm this at original check-in.
Long Layover
A long layover is either a gift or a grind — entirely depending on how you use the first 30 minutes. Get oriented, get comfortable, then decide: rest inside or explore the city.

8+ hours and the city is under 45 min away? Leaving is almost always the better choice. Store your bags and see the place — you’re already there.
Long layovers increase your exposure to delays, missed connections, and disruption. If a delay turns your 12-hour layover into a 36-hour one, insurance covers the hotel and meals.
Overnight Layover
An overnight layover done right means arriving at your destination rested and on schedule. Done poorly — missed alarm, stolen bag, no boarding pass — and it’s a disaster. This list prevents the disaster.

Even 4 hours in a real bed makes the next leg dramatically easier. Airport-adjacent hotels are often cheaper booked same-day. Search near your layover airport.
If a delay turns your overnight into two nights, insurance covers the extra hotel and meals. Without it, you’re paying out of pocket.
International Layover
International transit is where most layover disasters happen — wrong terminal, unexpected visa requirement, re-screening confusion. This checklist removes the guesswork before it costs you your flight.

An eSIM activates the moment you land — no SIM swap, no roaming charges, instant data wherever you are.
International transit is where visa issues, missed connections, and lost bags collide. Being covered matters most on these routes.
Leave the Airport Layover
The best layovers are the ones where you actually see the city. This checklist gives you the go/no-go framework, shows you how to move fast, and — critically — how to get back without missing your flight.

Don’t drag bags around the city. Store at the airport or book a city-centre locker service. Book ahead for peak travel days.
Layover Packing List
Everything you need in your carry-on to handle any layover scenario — from a 90-minute sprint to an unexpected overnight. The difference between a manageable layover and a miserable one is often what’s in the bag.

Missed Connection Recovery
You’ve missed your connection. The next 15 minutes determine whether you’re rebooked on the next available flight or stuck waiting. Speed, composure, and knowing exactly what to ask for are everything.

If the disruption is not the airline’s fault, travel insurance is your only financial cover for hotels, meals, and alternative flights. Start your claim while you’re still at the airport — you’ll need the policy number, delay notice, and all receipts.
EU Regulation 261/2004: Covers flights departing from, or arriving in, the EU on an EU carrier. Compensation of €250–€600 for delays of 3+ hours caused by the airline (not extraordinary circumstances).
US DOT rules: Involuntary bumping on domestic US flights triggers mandatory cash compensation of up to $1,550. Airlines must offer cash — travel vouchers are offered first but you can insist on cash.
All other routes: Cover is via travel insurance and airline policy. Know your policy before you travel.
Layover Safety
Airports are generally safe environments — but they are also high-density, sleep-deprived transit zones that attract opportunistic theft and digital fraud. Both physical and digital security are covered here.
The two items that make the biggest difference in busy transit hubs: a slash-proof crossbody bag and an RFID-blocking wallet.
An eSIM means you never need public airport WiFi for navigation or communication. Your own data is always more secure.
